NEF/H&R Handi Rifle questions

Hey all.
I've been doing some research on NEF/H&R Handi Rifles after looking at some Rossi Combos and being dissatisfied with the lack of barrel versatility in the Rossi setups.

I had a couple questions on the Handi Rifle:

1) The rifle has a .357 Mag barrel available. I know that you can fire .38SPL in .357 Mag revolvers. Can the same be done in a Handi Rifle? (cheaper ammo)

2) How complicated/time consuming is the changeout of barrels? Compared to breaking down an M16/AR15 to component parts.

3) Some reviews have said that recoil in larger calibers is significant due to the light weight of the rifle. Does anyone own a 12ga or 20ga barrel for one of these? How many 12ga shots can you put downrange on this platform before you need an ice pack for your shoulder?

Thanks in advance for any ifo you can provide. I'm looking to expand beyond 22LR plinking, and really like the versatility of changeable barrels. I won't be firing cans and cans of ammo, so having a different gun/rifle for each caliber isn't desirable. Plus, one stock with multiple barrels keeps the wife from being concerned that our house is turning into an armory ;).

my brother's first shotgun was a NEF 20 gauge single shot, back then i thought it kicked like a mule but it's really nothing a recoil pad can't tame. i haven't fired a 12 so can't tell ya on that.

the way i understand the barrel change outs is, you send the whole gun to new england, they replace the barrel & send the gun back to you. they will not sell a barrel directly to you for replacement.

if you want to be able to change out your own barrel i suggest one of the thompson/center guns.

Rossi ? bad ???

As far as I knew Rossi was running circles around H&R with the Matched pairs and Trifecta series of single shot's.

I'd seen Rossi single shot first hand the .17Hmr and 12ga matched pair (Neighbor's), I know they have allot to offer from all the ones my local gunshop was moving, (.308/12ga/.22lr) (.243/20ga/.17Hmr)

H&R comes with Barrels as well, we dont useally see them advertised though.
of cource you could send in the H&R for fitting at the Factory, 6 years ago fitting a barrel was $100, I couldent say for shure what it would cost today

As far as I know the only company that sells a single shot that does not require factory fitting of barrels is Thompson Center.

Sending the lower in to NEF/H&R isn't a huge issue for me, so long as the barrels are freely swappable once it gets back to me. I was under the impression that was the case, yes?
My main goal was to buy one rifle that I could swap from shotgun, to small caliber (.223 most likely), to larger caliber (30-30 or .308?).

Once you have fitted barrels they swap out in seconds. In a larger caliber I might urge you to stay with a rimmed case(like 30-30).

I had a handi rifle in 270. It was only good for a couple shots then lost accuracy because of heat. I sold it and bought a Marlin X7 in 308. My buddy has the handi now and it's hit or miss. His 223 is a good shooter, but the 270 and 243 barrels were junk. Some folks love them, but I'm not a fan.

I have a newer H&R Synthetic Handi Rifle in .357. You can get it with a 20 gauge rifled slug barrel and that is all. Same with the 44mag. It only comes with a 12 gauge rifled slug barrel. Some of the older rifles could be set up with different calibers of your choice including the 357 or 44. The 357 can be used with 38spl. I have a lot of 38spl cases and I am playing with reloads to see what I can do. It is also possible to load 357 cases with 180 or 200 grn pointed bullets in .358.

Thanks for the info, everyone.
I realized just before reading JTJ's post that the .357 and 44 barrels had asterisks next to them. Oops!
I'll have to run the serials of the used models near here by the H&R customer service folks to figure out which ones have which frame types, and learn which ones can take which barrels when sent in to the factory.

I saw a used 3 barrel set at the gun show last weekend. It had 357, 22 Hornet and a 20 gauge. Price was outrageous. I just walked away when he told me how much he wanted.
