Curious, is it for you, or a youngster?

I'd get a .308.

I have a 243 and a 308, both are good rounds. I shoot the 308 9 times out of ten. Much better barrel life also. In that price range I would hit the pawn shops looking for a used remington 700.

The Marlins are GREAT rifles for the price. You can't go wrong with the Marlin X7. I had a Marlin XL7 in .270 and it shot just as good as other rifles costing hundreds more. It also comes equipped with their version of the Accutrigger and a Weaver type scope base. I haven't had experience with the Savage Axis so I can't comment on that.
