Hate to bother everyone but I'm stuck. The local gun shop can't help so I thought I would turn to some real advice. I have an old Remington rifle. Single shot, roll down loader. The only number I can fin on it are J249234. 32.

I can't find the caliber of the rifle and hope you may be able to help. The rifle is in great condition but would like to know the Caliber along with any other information that may me important to the rifle so that I can fire the weapon. 32's. Are to big and a 25's are to small. Any advice would be appreciated. All of the gun shops are complexed.

First, we need pictures. In focus, well lighted.

Second, sound like you may have a rolling block rifle. These were made in several calibers, including an obsolete .32 RIMFIRE. Please take a look at where the firing pin is- is it at what would be the center of the cartridge, or at the edge?

That's tough one. Any chance of getting a photo? And a caliber smaller than 32 but bigger than 25? Is it rim fire or center? They made a number of rolling block models in the late 1800's and early 1900's, in .32 or the .25 Stevens, but I've never heard of anything in between.

Amend that. They did make a couple of models of the #5 rolling blocks chambered in .30 US.

I have owned many Remington rolling block rifles. We for sure need pictures. My guess is a #4 or a #6 in .32 rimfire. I do not believe Remington made the 4's or 6's in .30 rimfire. Is it a round barrel or octagon? If octagon then it can not be a #6. How wide is the action? That would be a big hint to the model.

Right the 4's and 6's weren't made in .30. Just the 5's.

I will get some pcs for you. In the mean time, the following describes the rifle .

1. It DOES have an Octagon barrel. I have a twin that goes with it but it is marked 22 long and short. Also Octagon barrel and in great shape. this is What confuses me a bit. Why would one be marked with the caliber and the other not.?.?.?

2. The numbers are printed on the bottom of the receiver and are so faded, they are hard to see. They are printed in just the place where I would use to steady the rifle on something.

3. J249234. 32. These are the numbers I refer to.

4. 22 cal. Falls right through the barrel. Same for 25's. 32's will not fit in the chamber. I even removed the barrel assembly and nothing I have will fit.

I'm very confused and would like to get this figured out. It has such a long barrel for what seems to be a small caliber, I'll bet it's a straight shooter and has the ability to reach out and touch something. pics to follow.

The 32's that you tried were 32 rimfires? If you tried .32 S&W longs or shorts they would be to fat if your gun is .32 rimfire. .32 rimfires ammo is about the same diameter as .32 short or long Colt. Sounds like you have a #4 which is a fine rifle. To bad yours is 32 rimfire as shells are about $1.50 each or more and of course can not be reloaded.
