I already figured the smooth bore part, can you even shoot anything but slugs out of a rifled?
Seems a little much for the Mossberg 500. http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/37_336/products_id/46907/Mossberg+54169+500+COMBO+12+28AC18CB+PG I'd check the local walmart for the package with the hunting barrel & the shorty HD barrel, like in this package. I paid $100 for mine in 1995, on the way to dove hunt and with a free box of shells; it is a VERY used late 1970's model. I have changed out the furniture for plastics and paid about $80 for the 18.5" barrel.

You wouldn't want to shoot a shot load through a rifled barrel; it is my understanding that it spins the shot into a lovely donut pattern without much shot in the center.

I own a mossburg 500 persuader witch I bought on sell at duahams for 250 but they normally run 300ish. When I get home torrorrow ill post a pic of it. It's not a hunting 12 gue but it's perfect for home defense or a go to war cqc weapon. Holes 8 shells with the plug out an it can accept up to 3" mags.

Does it really matter which one you buy now since you know you're eventually going to own all 3?

Most versatile - 12 gauge
Most fun - SKS by far
Best long range choice - Mosin

So its cheap now but give it 5 more years an a lot of that ammo will be dried up. The sks ammo in 762x39 is massed produced so it will be easier to get a hold of the ammo. I perfect the Chinese sks cause they our chrome lined. A shotgun in 12gau is always a good choice. Seems to me like u just want a gun to have fun with. All of those guns will be a good choice.

7.62x54r isn't going anywhere in surplus supplies. Its still in very wide production for combloc use in medium machineguns. The soviets produce waaaaaaay more than needed and sell us and others older stock. They aren't switching rounds anytime in the distant future.

More ammo makers are producing high quality modern versions of this round the two biggest are hornady and winchester.

I sure hope it stays around for a while. I'm talking the old cheap 54R dated from the late 40s an 1950s. It will eventually go up in price. What gun would you pick out of the three. Always like hearing ur input

I've had SKS and Mosin Nagant, but I have more fun with the SKS. I sold my Mosin Nagant some time back because it had substantially more recoil than the SKS, and a steel butt plate, so it didn't feel very good on the shoulder.

I handle about 40 to 50 rounds of 7.62x54r then my shoulder is crying. 556/233 or even 762x39 I can shoot all day. The Chinese sks is my next buy. I use to own a waffle works Ak but sold it for truck parts. I like the ideal of the sks having a 20" barrel. The Chinese ones our chromed lined!!
