Need help choosing

I'm looking for a bolt action rifle, mainly just for punching paper but also for occasionally hunting deer. I have practically no experience with centerfire rifles so I need your help choosing the best one for my budget. I'm looking to spend a maximum of 1400$ on the rifle (for reference a basic Remington 700 SPS costs ~900$ in Finland).

The models Ive been looking at are Remington 700 SPS Varmint, Weatherby Vanguard Varmint and CZ 550 Varmint. As I said, I'll do most of the shooting at the range so I thought the Varmint-style thicker barrel would be good. I'll be shooting from 100 to 300yds. Caliber wise I've decided to go with the .308 Win. I know that ballistically .223 Rem would be better for the ranges I'm shooting, but the .308 Win is cheaper and more available in Finland. Also it wouldn't be legal to hunt deer with the .223 Rem. I will get a supressor for the gun (while I still can...), so is there something ammo or gun wise that I should take in to consideration?

Im kinda leaned towards the Remington 700 because of all the aftermarket parts available, but tell me your opinions on the rifles I listed and feel free to add a different one you think would be better.

If I was going to buy a new rifle I really think I would buy a Savage and spend the left overs on the optics. I say that based on all the great things I've heard from others about them.

Ive understood too that Savage makes really good rifles, but they are difficult to find in Finland. Also the 1400$ is just for the gun, althought it would be nice to spend less than that.

Thanks for your input jca!

There are a lot of members here that know a lot about rifles but I think Stalking Bear may be the resident expert. If I'm wrong, no offense to the others members.

I'd go with the CZ or Weatherby over the 700. The other one I'd look at would be the Howa 1500. I'd love to get my hands on a 1500 Axiom to feel out. I just got back from shooting my Savage Axis for the first time and for a $270 gun I'm very impressed.

Any specific reason for choosing the CZ and Weatherby over the 700? I'll take a look at the Howa 1500 next time I visit the gun store.

I just dont care for Rem. I'v owned a couple and had nothing but problems with them. I know its just my bad luck but I stay away from them like there an STD.

Hmm...Ive heard some people having problems with Remingtons, but then again in Finland they have a good reputation for being built tough (altough a bit rough).

Any one else, thoughts on Remingtons rifles?

Unless you are into serious target competition, you dont need the bull barrel. I would also look at the Tikka and the Sako. Caliber choices could include the 6.5x55 or the 7x57. the 6.5x55 is noted for its accuracy. I believe Tikka guarantees 1MOA. I have been looking at one here.
