Ahhh, good 'ol Fort Lost-In-The Woods! 3531 here, Motor-T! I was there in the winter of 2000. Had no idea it would be so flipping cold there!

I went to Ft. Leonard Wood in winter/spring of '00-'01. I was there for the USMC Military Police Academy. Friggin hated it!! First time I ever saw snow!! The only good thing about the cold was during our OC qual. It helped against the pain from the pepper spray.

Yeah, that's one of the reasons I'm leaning towards the .308. A lot cheaper and easier to find. Being in Florida, the deer and bear aren't exactly large, so .30-06 might be a little much. How has your ATR been holding up? I've heard it's the best at that price point.

It's been great. I haven't been able to find ammo locally for it so I haven't been able to shoot it as much as I would like to. I think I have between 100 and 160 down the pipe, no issues so far

..Just throwing this out there, but why not consider a Ruger American series for the game gun? Reasonably priced, American made and available in all the calibers you mentioned?
http://www.ruger.com/products/americanRifle/index.html
...OH and add my thanks for your service as well. MUCH respect for you sir!!

That is one good looking rifle! My LGS has some in stock right now! Man, y'all are making it tough choosing a rifle! I love Rugers as well. I guess I'll just have to go and try them all on. See what fits best. It seems that everybody is leaning closer to the higher caliber rifle so I guess that'll be my next purchase! Thanks for all the help from everybody. I appreciate it!

We need to make a correction,,,,,,,to your thinking,,,,,,,,there is no BEAR season in Florida, but I know you were getting ramped up with all the post coming back to ya.

I would stay with the rifle in 308 win. It's only 50-60 feet per second slower than the 30-06, and a lot less recoil. Here is one other rifle I would look at, had them before and still own them now ------------------ Remington 760 BDL or ADL (old model),,,,,,,,,(new model) 7600. These pump guns can really put the rounds out if need be.

Yep that was when I was there too, for Motor T school. Cold as ****! Remember that good fun 5 mile USMC detachment run? That was the most ridiculous run I have ever been on. Running with every single Marine on post. All I can say was the accordion effect was out of control. That was what I hated the most, PT in that friggin cold!
