Hey there! I'm new to this forum, but fairly knowledgeable about firearms. My question is this: I'm going with my brother in March 2012 to Namibia to hunt kudu among 5-6 other animals. I'm bringing my Remington 721 chambered in 30-06 and my bro is bringing his 8 mm. I'm thinking about using Hornady 220 gr. Round nose and 180 gr Barnes X. Any opinions on this? And any recommendations for the 8mm? Planning on using IMR 3031 and federal GM large rifle primers since this has proven a good combo for my 165 gr. deer loads. Thanks for any input at all.

I guess nobody has anything to offer... maybe if I said my rifle was a .308 or AR15....

welllll i dont think a whole lot of us have ever hunted kudu in namibia... those of us that havent dont have a lot of relevant advice to give

Check with the outfitter that your using,and see what they recommend.I have a friend that went to Africa hunting last year,and he shot most of his game with a 300 Tejas,and 375 H&H.

As for the sarcasim-Yes,there are quite a few folks here that shoot 308's and AR's.The problem is,not too many people on this forum have ever hunted in Africa,so not many have any knowledge to give you on the subject.

I am a great fan of the 30-06 and have killed many deer and elk with it. However I have never used the Barnes or Hornaday bullets. The Nosler Partitions are legendary in the 30-06. Either 180 or 200 grainers are very well thought of in Alaska, which has large game animals. However after reloading for the 30-06 for 40 years now I think you are using way to fast of powder so such a large case. You wont be able to as high a velocity with 3031 that you will with 4350 or 4831. 3031 is usually used in smaller cases and very large calibers. I never loaded for the 8mm but have many similar sized cases and these had a real liking to 4350 powders.

I have hunted in botswana, namibia, 4times in the last 5 yrs imo the 3006 is just not enough I use a 458 win mag. All 3 kudu I have taken took it hard but took the 458 short blood trails. Only 1 dropped right in his tracks. All of the ph we have hunted with would not allow anything less than a 300 win mag, I have seen other hunters use smaller calibers but I wouldnt

Yea I'm with mulie I would go with bigger caliber never know when u come across the black death an the 3006 and 8mm won't be enough
