Default My friend wants a POWERFUL rifle

My friend has decided that he wants a serious rifle for hunting elk,so I did alot of research on calibers(knowing nothing of the ones I researched ),but I liked the power, flattness and ammo price of the .300 Win mag so I suggested that.I gave him other choices and ballistics numbers, but he is just about dead set that he wants the .300 RUM.I also suggested that he consider the .35 Whelen or .338 Win mag too. What do you suggest he get?

What part of the country is your friend in? .300 Win Mag is a great elk cartridge, but in many places the common caliber is .270.

Will the rifle be used for other hunting?

I was looking for a 338 Win Mag to hunt elk when I lucked into a deal on a 300 Win Mag. The 300 Win Mag did a great job loaded with 180 gr Nosler Accubond handloads. I would stick with a Win Mag as the ammo is outrageously expensive and the recoil is higher with the 300 RUM. Also you can buy ammo for the Win Mag just about everywhere whereas the RUM is usually special order. If he handloads and is set on the RUM then go for it.

The faster the bullet the more the bloodshot meat. 300 Win mag is plenty for anything on this continent. I have a .338 Win because I share the woods with 1000 lb bears. Otherwise I'd be happy with a .30-06.

Default 300 wm

I'm with most of you in saying that the 300 win mag is the best bet as far as ammo and ability to drop just about anything out there. I owned one and it is almost too devistating for whitetail, but awesome for elk.

A couple of suggestions for thought:

One should be comfortable in shooting regular high power cartridges like the venerable 30-06 or 270 Win before upgrading to a magnum. Most hunters do not spend enough range time and upgrading to a magnum won't offset the lack of accuracy.

Since a friend (with a fair amount of trigger time behind a hunting rifle) generally doesn't ask someone unfamiliar with magnum calibers for advice, I suggest you consider encouraging him to keep things simple and master the basics and hunt with something like the very capable 30-06 using premium 180-gr. bonded ammo.

The 300 Remington Ultra Mag is for experienced shooters who can take advantage of it's higher velocity and confidently hit their target with a clean, humane kill.

Good luck with tactfully pointing your friend in the right direction and Happy Holidays!

I'd agree on the upgrade from 270. But it's borderline.

Save a lot of time and money and get a bolt action 30-06 and fly some 180gr. Sierra Gamekings. On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the most, at 400 yards the elk will agree that it'll score a 10 on the deadness scale.

For easier hunting situations he can use 150gr. bullets and sell the 270 to save some money. I have both, but sometimes wonder why .. Until I Remember I just like guns.

338 win mag? Holy sh--. I know guys that hunt whitetail with 300 win mags, why not?

The neat thing about th 300Rum that I noticed for a non handloader is that there are 3 power levels from Remington.Level one is the ballistic twin to the 30-06,level 2 is equal to a .300 Win mag and level 3 is full out .300 Rum power,I know it's probably a marketing thing that is sucking me right into it thinking he could use level one for whitetail and the others for bigger game for (only)$50 a box,!But it seems like the Win calibers are easier to find and alot cheaper so he should probably stick with them.
