Yes, that is definitely on my list of must haves.... along with finding a couple accessory packs that someone doesn't want. Mine didn't come with the extras -sling, cleaning kit, oilers, pouches.. I only got the complete rifles and bayonets. I need one for a M91/30 and a M44...

Or would you be ok with a long eye relief scope that is mounted forward of the receiver, but does nothing permanent to the rifle.

I don't know about the specific mount in the E-bay add. A mount from Brass Stacker gets good reviews.
Would you buy a Sherman Tank and mount a header on it? Would you buy a Thompson submachine gun and put a red dot on it?

I keep all of mine in tact. If I want another modern hunting rifle I'll get one.

Having said that, however, for $130 you could get another Mosin to tinker with and keep the one you have as is. That's one of the real beauties of these things

Default Must have Mosin Nagant upgrades?

A nice cosmoline cleaning, a good oiling, a rubber recoil pad, and some original Soviet made stripper clips and ammo on them is all you need IMHO.

That was kind of the point I was wanting the OP to consider. If you want to tinker, temporarily without doing anything permanent, there is one way to go. If you want original, stay original. If you want a sniper configuration save and buy one. If you want to go completely custom, commit ahead of time. I'm keeping my eyes open for a Mosin that someone else may have already let Bubba loose on, to use for a project gun.

Check ebay, they usually come with the original Russian cardboard box. I'd also check Liberty Tree Collectors, buymilsurp, and Numrich. eBay is your best bet though.

Yeah, I have some from eBay, must be the Chinese crap. I can load the cartridges into them, pit them in the spot in the rifle, but pushing as hard as I dare they will not slide in. I even tried some gun oil to lube them..

You do not have to shoot these bullets all the time. I have ten 203gr steel case bullets for every brass case bullet I have have. But when you are going to shoot a deer or a critter way over yonder you need brass case ammo. The 7.62x45 kills critters like nothing I have shot a critter with before, that includes a 270, 30/06, 338 win mag and a 300 win magnum. When you shoot a critter with a 91/30 it just flops over dead. There is no kicking or twitching from the animal, it is just stone cold dead.
