Most underrated rifle.
What is the most underrated rifle out there. I am not talk about SAVAGE. I am talking about a rifle that is out there that few people know about that is really good.

I'll throw out two, but they're both lever actions:
1. Henry .22--American made, slick action, nice wood and fit.
2. Marlin 1894--Americam made, available in pistol calibers, loads of fun to shoot.

My Marlin MR7 in 30-06. They were only manufactured a few years ( 1999 was the last I think ) outstanding rifle.

In MY opinion the Remington model 788 is perhaps the most underrated widespread rifle in existence. They regularly outshoot the 700s straight out of the box. I only have 1 left is the 7mm08 that my daughter lays claim to.

My brother had a 788 in 308. That gun was a shooting SOB right there. 100 yard .5" 5 shot groups with factory ammo.

cattango,
I agree! I Think that was one reason Remington did not sell them long. For the following reason. That year I purchased a new Remington 700 BDL in 243 Winchester and a Remington 788 in 22-250. Well the 788 with all of its I believe (9?) Locking lugs on the bolt would out shoot the 700 any day. So I assume since it was almost like an economy rifle and embarrassed the company due to its extreme accuracy and being inexpensive, they may have dumpted the product line for that reason. I understand why a company would do that but what a shame. I wish I could find another one in great condition in 22-250. Since I had traded it many years ago.

Many surplus rifles are given short shrift. The VZ24 is just one of them. I also think the M1 carbine is underrated and was a pretty good deer getter back in the day.
