Mosin-Nagant vs. SVT-40

I currently own a 91/30 Mosin-Nagant. I am hoping to mount a scope on it and use it for hunting. My question is would it be more convient to purchase a Mosin-Nagant carbine with a scope already attached for it being shorter and easier to carry in the woods. or would a SVT-40 be a better buy?

Well lets see. A 91/30 cost about $100.00, an SVT40 cost between $900.00 and 1200.00, add a few hundred more fore a scope and mount.
You can buy a post war 91/30 PU still for around $350.00. Here is an auction of a post war PU rework. I have the same scope prefix on mine. In the 1960's, these were reworked for export to unknown places. These rifles came from the Ukraine and have the progress factory stamp on the scope.

jp; Isnt there a scope base that attaches to the rear sight base on the MN? It would require a scout or pistol scope but would not permanently alter the rifle. He could buy better glass with the savings.

JTJ, there is a number of scout bases. My issue is that you can't cheap out on glass. If the base costs $70.00 and the scope $150.00...250.00, not to mention the $100.00 for the rifle, your still at $320.00..420.00.
I guess it is all up to what the buyer wants.

i actually own a m91/30 mosin nagant with the iron sights that i use for hunting. they seem to work fine for me. but if you really feel the need for a scope i would suggest the p/u that was designed for it. this is so the bolt handle will clear under the scope when pulled back. they are still available for around 25-45 dollars depending on condition and dealer. of coarse with that option you will also need the curved bolt handle which may run you about 40-70 dollars. and honestly is kind of a pain to switch.

hope this was helpful
