Mosin–Nagant question

I've been looking for a Mosin–Nagant to surprise my son. I'm not the expert at all on old firearms.

A couple of years ago when he was at a camp in Wyoming, he won a .22LR competition and the prize was taking a few shots with a Russian sniper rifle. As he was 12 at the time and I wasn't there, we don't know exactly what model it was. Of course he took pictures of what he shot, but not the rifle.

He was absolutely thrilled with being able to shoot it - prone of course, and still had a slight bruse to his shoulder to show for it. :) Searching some pictures online back then, he thinks it was a Mosin–Nagant Model 1891/30. Of course now that he's older, I can't find one without spending more than really want to. GunBroker has two, but the pristine one is $500, which is more than I was planning on spending. There's a cheaper one, but I don't like the condition. Not a huge deal - I just keep looking.

Just saw Cabela's has Mosin-Nagant Model 91/30's in stock right now for $150. Just looking for some thoughts on this 91/30 or other suggestions.
Thanks.

The 91/30 is a great gun get them around 100 or so. Up a little lately so 150 isn't terrible.

I hear people get good ones from budsguns, try shoping around at your local big 5 store. They are usually stocked with mosin's

I've never been in the position of thanking a Hectocotylus, but thanks. :p

Grizzdude - no Big 5's out here, but thanks as well.

I've bought 3 from Bud's, 2 of them were not exactly prom queens but one was as near to unblemished as a 70 year old mil-surp rifle could be. All 3 have clean bores with lots of life left in them. Bud's has always done me well...

The key to buying these rifles is bore, bore, bore...The mil-surp ammo is corrosive and if it wasn't cleaned properly, you'll waste your money on a rusty mess..

I guess $150 would be considered reasonable nowadays and with these new 'executive actions' concerning mil-surp imports, it may be a good time to get it before the prices go through the roof...

Look into the Chinese T-53's too. Same gun (basically) and is still out there to be had and affordable...

The M-44's are an option too in a carbine version but may be a bit more pricy.

The Finnish M-39's are considered the gold standard by some but you're getting into the $300-$500 range...(me has one and it's all that and a bag of chips...:p)

In my neck of the woods, my LGS's get them in bulk but they go pretty quickly...I try to stay away from the big box stores.

Here's the go to site for Mosin info...

And a quick pic of my alleged 'prom queen'...

Yes, it sounded vaguely familiar from way back when but just had to confirm.

Do a tour of local gun shops and pawn shops. Seek out the 91/30 rifle and avoid the M44 carbine; the carbine kicks so hard that it takes the fun out of things pretty quickly. If I recall, J&G Sales has just raised the prices on 91/30 guns to about $200. Do you have a local site called "backpage"? It is like Craigslist, but does have lots of firearms stuff in the sporting equipment section. Good luck with your search.
