Prices being the way they are, it might be a better move to get

a M44(same carbine, with a built-on bayonet). Then decide whether

or not you want to remove the bayonet.

You'll save a lot of money and ag, unless you're a

hardcore collector, and specifically, really want

to collect an M38.

The M44 is @125-160$, in fair condition, right now.

Or M-44 if you don't mind the bayo. If you do go with a M-44 extend your bayo out before shooting (helps w accuracy). M-38 & M-44 are identical otherwise.

The reason the bayo is permanently attached to the M-44 is to help accuracy. The Commies found that out the expensive
way with the M-38. By the way many people Bubba Nagants (91-30's), but I wouldn't do that to M-38's or M-44's. If for no other reason than for history.

I have been looking at Mosins for a while. I would like to put a synthetic stock on it(to replace the cosmoline oozing wood and make it lighter), clean out the bolt(to stop the bolt from sticking), and placing a scope with mount without any drilling. Would the barrel on the 91/30 be too long and the m44 or m38 be better? I am also looking for a inexpensive way to start hunting.

After putting a few hundred rounds through my M44s, I'm not

finding a major difference in accuracy, with the bayonet in either

the open or closed position. YMMV.

91-30s are cheap. M44s are a little more. IMO,

it depends on whether you prefer long rifles

to the shorter carbine. I find the M44 to be a handy

truck gun. M38s are a lot harder to find, and more costly.

The ammo's even cheaper in bulk. 440 round "spam cans"

are @ 85$, before shipping.

You should look into completely field-stripping the rifle

and cleaning off the cosmo before you use it. One of mine hadn't

been cleaned since it was shipped from the factory in 1955. To

be kind, they were generous with the cosmoline.

Would the round or hex receiver be better?
