Default mosin nagant

just picked myself up a mosin nagant for 85 dollars from big5 im pretty stoked and i want to take it out but i cant find 7.62.54r ammo around where i live, big5 sells winchester ammo 20$ for a box of 20 which seems kinda steep in my opinion so can anyone suggest any places i might be able to find ammo for cheaper?? thanks in advance to anyone who can help out

WalMart carries it. Forget Big 5 for ammo, they're always overpriced.

I don't know where you are located, but I buy mine here in FL from Knights Shooting Sports for about $8 for 20 rounds.

Southern Ohio Gun seems to be out of a lot of ammo right now, check Midway, Aim Point, and auctionarms.com and gunbroker.com last year I bought a lifetime supply of Bulgarian milsurp for $100. You may see it listed as 7.62 Russian- same as 7.62x54R.

Default Mosin-Nagant

Hey, I'm just getting started, and I was thinking about purchasing a Mosin-Nagant. You can't argue with the price, but I've heard that the quality varies widely on these things. Is there some sort of guide that lets me know what to look out for when purchasing a rifle like this?

I read a article saying that these are pretty good weapons. Am I on the right track with this weapon as a newbie, or should I look into something else. I'd like something inexpensive that's at least reasonable quality.

Thanks for the help.

Eddie, just my opinion- they are crude, ugly, heavy, ungainly, awkward- and will still work after you run over the thing with a tank, bury it under a collapsing building, and slather it with mud, blood, or beer! No, the finish and operation is not that of a good 03 Springfield or Mauser 98- but better than you would expect for the price. I have a 91/30, an M38, and an M-44. Key is going to be matching numbers, and condition of bore (especially the last inch at the muzzle) The Commies had batches of these in storage- they have been run back thru the arsenals for refurb, and dumped on the market to pump cash into their economy. I paid well under $100 for each- new wood, reblued, decent bores, and all the accessories. For $68, don't expect a MOA shooter. But like dating fat girls, they can be fun. surplusrifle.com has some good info on these, and there are M-N forums around.

Thanks for the info c3shooter. I might just have to get one. I've seen some videos of these things in action, and they do look like fun. I'm going to go do some research. Thanks again.

I've got a 91/30 and an M44 as well, paid $90 for the 91/30, $48 for the M44 back in 2001. Just bought some surplus ammo in a sealed 300 round can for $54 at the last gun show. Not target rifles, but I would not want to get within 1000 yards of it either!! I just feel that having a few full power battle rifles that are fool proof and brutally tough and a good supply of ammo around to be comforting, you know a SHTF kind of thing.
