Last few I bought were under $100 delivered. That was around a year ago.

Thats why.

But its also because the russian guns were made with virtual slave labour, the raw materials harvested with slave labor. For ruskies its all profit as they have people who want them and millions of them in bunkers waiting for a new owner. Whats not to like?? Only thing is if there was child labor the stitching on the slings would be better.... heh

All they have to do is put a shipping label on a crate and off they go to a dealer in the usa.

Now is a great time to get one since in the last few years several major ammo makers are producing new high quality ammo for it and its even stocked at most wal marts

Best reason to get one is cheap ammo, rugged reliability, power of a 30-06 in a sub 200$ rifle.

There are scope mounts that replace the rear sight but a extea long eye relief scope must be used. I wouldnt drill the reciever for a mount they dont lend well to that sort of bubbasmithing.

The 91/30 has been around over a century most are older than any 700 rem and will be around long after the 700 is no longer made.

Winchester white box 7.62x54r is excellent hunting ammo cheaper than 30-06 or 243 or 270.

You do kinda need to know what your looking at if your not getting one straight out of the ruskie cosmoline. Even then quality is a issue.
How cheap is the ammunition? I heard that there is ap ammo?

there is ap ammo for it but its very rare as most of it was reserved for snipers and still is. they used it to disable machine guns and other german military gear.

what is erronously claled "ap" now is just soviet steel jacketed surplus ammo with a thin copper wash. thats pretty much every spam can there is of both 7.62x54r and most surplus 7.62x39 and all 5.45 soviet.

this isnt AP its just got a thin steel jacket instead of copper as steel is cheaper. an actual AP round has a hardened steel penetrator core which pretty much none of any x54R has. the real reason most ranges ban steel ammo is because it has a very very high tendency to strike sparks and start fires

Most Mausers can be tweaked to shoot very accurately; Mosin's, not so much.

My bad for not specifying what I meant clearer. I meant that the techniques of firearm manufacturing weren't as advanced, this it isn't fair to compare a rifle made in 1943 to one made in recent times. Mosins aren't generally bedded or their barrels free-floated like most modern bolt actions.

Another thing which will affect shooting offhand is these rifles

are heavy.

While this will deter smaller folks, it will help brawnier dudes

offset recoil.

I noticed the weight but I like the weight as you said it lightens the recoil.

Surplus ammo was going for under a hundred bucks for 440 rounds when I bought my last 7.62x54R ammo. Probably gone up a bit since then. Still not real expensive since demand isn't super high, because they aren't really something someone goes out and does a lot of high volume shooting with. Also teh ammo is usually not reloadable, and is often corrosive, so it stays kind of cheap.

What type of armor do you want to pierce?

Just prepping ideas in case the worst happens. Possibly body armor.
