Yeah that's true. If I was ever faced with something that required all 30 rounds of an ak id be in a whole heap of trouble that that inaccurate thing may not get me out of.

To quote Wyatt Earp, "Fast is fine, but accuracy is everything". The AK 47 is accurate, but it all depends on the shooter and if the sights are properly adjusted. That's why I prefer the Winchester 94, because I can shoot it better at longer ranges than the AK 47. Not to mention I use 170 grain cartridges in my Winchester so it has a greater potential at longer range due to the higher mass of the projectile and energy behind it.

Reloading is something I need to look into and invest in. What a round about price to get started?

Unless you're going to use iron's, I would go with a Marlin 30-30 because it eject's out the side and a Winchester out the top. It's just easier to mount a scope other than a side mounted scope for the Winchester. Other than that, they are both good hunting rifles.

I already own the winchester. irons are good for me on this one. When I get a bolt action I'm going all out on my optics.

I'm pretty old school, because optics on a lever gun are ugly to me. Then again the only time I use optics is for a modern bolt action rifle or replica of a bolt action sniper like the 91/30 Mosin.

Tried a reflex scope yet?
It's small enough to fit a top ejecting lever gun, and you'll throw rocks at a
regular scope when you see how well it works.
It's small, light, and fast on the target.

You are going to drop a good five hundred dollars to get a good start, but it gets cheaper from there on out.

If you reload with 160FTX bullets it is possible to improve the 30/30. I handled an AK once and wouldn't have one. After shooting conventional firearms all my life the AR's and AK's don't feel right, especially the AK.
The only downside to levers is the stock drop hinders scope use vs a straighter one.
