mid to long range rifle round

what are some of the rounds that are larger than a .308 but smaller and cheaper than a .338 lapua, that fit in a bolt action format

Well brother, that is a list as long as well, it's a pretty good sized list.

You see, the .308 is a SHORT action rifle round.

The .338 is a LONG action rifle round.

So while the diameter of the bullet doesn't seem like it's that different, there is a HUGE performance gap where a TON of rounds would fall into.

Let's try to narrow the field a bit, otherwise the list will be 6 posts long.

What would you like the round to do? Ideally, what is the application?

Also, you might want to stop by the Introduction Section and introduce yourself to the guys and gals of FTF.

The 300 Win mag is the commonly accepted "happy middle" between the 7.62x51mm and the 338 Lapua mag.

You want a 338 Edge. 338 Lapua performance in a cheaper 300 RUM package.

Are we talking bullet diameter or caliber? There are not many choices for the bullet diameter, .323 comes to mind which is 8mm and is not very popular in US circles. If your talking caliber....well the important question is what are you using it for? There is a HUGE difference in the performance levels between .308 Win and .338 Lapua mag.

Stalking Bear is right, and Premium as well as standard factory ammunition is easily found.

like others have said for what do you want it for??

the .308 in my opinion is my choice as an end of the world longrange rifle round. it is probably the most common caliber in the US. plenty of surplus rounds available from military and civilian sources.

for hunting just about any caliber is decent.

LEO sniping apps .338lapua .308win and everything in between all good.

i use my .308 for target shooting and for hunting i use my winchester model 70 in .458winmag. my prefered hunting load is hornady 350Grn SP over 73 grains of IMR 3031. perfect for white tail bear moose elk etc.

maybe you need to think about what you really want. any center fire rifle round is going to be pricey to shoot often. might think about looking into reloading. it opens a lot of doors.

Really a broad spectrum as stated before. Again is it bullet diameter or cartridge length. What is mid to long ranges? Target or hunting? Wildcat or standard.

Is there anything left of a whitetail after you shoot with a .458 winmag?

I doubt he is shooting the dog sized Fla. variety! I use a 286gr .366 bullet. Drops them quick!
