Default Which Marlin?

I am thinking of getting a new big bore whitetail gun for deer at close range in some brushy woods where I hunt.Should I get the .44 mag rifle because I already have a S&W .44 mag revolver to match,or should I get the .45-70 guide gun because,well-it's a .45-70 and will drop about anything and just looks way cooler, especially in SS?

I have the guide gun and love it. Although i use it for nothing other than impressing a crown who gather round to watch me fire the boomstick. it TRULY is a boomstick. 10 rounds and you're done for the day.

That being said, you may want to look into the full sized .45-70. I dont know what distances you shoot at, but 100-150 is about all you're gonna get out of this thing. At 100 yards on open sights i had a 2-3" grouping which is okay, but still, its not really a "pleasure" to shoot the thing, especially more than once.

The trigger is awesome on it, and its fun to shoot, just not comfortable.

35 Remington. The 45-70 is not cheap to shoot and pushes back hard. Good gun for Alaska.

Get the .44. Try a holographic sight, fast and accurate.

It's so hard for me since I grew up on a .444 Marlin, the .444 is neither more like a .44 Mag nor more like a .45-70,it's somewhere inbetween. In my head I think,a hot .44 has the same energy as a standard .45-70,but a .45-70 can go hotter and heavier and take anything.............yet,the .44 has hollowpoint, and shoots cheap, and shoots specials--but the .45-70 is prettier.: confused: arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I have a .45-70 Guide Gun. I replaced the rear leaf with a receiver mounted peep. Accurate way beyond the .44 mag effective range. I can handload hot enough to shoot through two big hogs, or a large utility pole. Or I can load down to 50 yard whitetail loads (300 gr HP @ 1400). I can load 405 gr soft points for extreme penetration.

.45-70 comes in hollow points too....

The hornady Leverevolution stuff is like a 325g HP with that lil ballistic tip
