Marlin 336

So I was at the lgs today and a marlin 336 caught my eye. The price tag on it is 350. Its used and comes with a scope. Honestly can't say what kind of scope...does this sound like a decent price our should I look around more? Is there anything I should look out for our beware of? I've never had a lever gun and don't know much about them...

sounds like a decent deal to me if it is in great shape. blue model? what is the model.? also, keep in mind, that the older model marlins, before the sell to remington, are becoming more valued.

they have the 336w at our wal-mart and it is $360 w/o scope, but that is new.

350 is about 50 bucks off normal retail for the 336w combo

1984,

I am not sure of what the Prefix is on the Marlin 336 30-30 you are speaking of but the ideal Model 336 would have been produced prior to 2007 when Kenna sold the Marlin Factory to RACI Holding who owned Remington for around 42 Million. In 2007 Ceruberus purchased Remington as well as RACI's Marlin for 118 Mil. And assumed another 252 Mil. In 2010 the Marlin employees in New Haven CT were advised the plant was being shut down and moved. In truth if Cerberus had not stepped in when the did there would probably be no Remington or Marlin today since the company was also 252 Mil in the hole when they purchased them. I have been told, that the quality has went down significantly from 2007 -1210? And I understand. Some here on the FTF could possibly help you with listing the prefixes on pre 2007 Marlin 336 Rifles in 30-30. Just telling you this so you can make the best choice. :)

After speaking to a few old guys (I never pass up talking to an old guy) I'm starting to eye ball a few marlins.

I never ignore the advice of someone who has been around longer and knows more than I do...I might always follow the advice but I always keep it in mind when I make my choices

I have a straight grip wood stock all steel model. Great gun!

Find an all steel one and snap it up. No comparison to the new ones. Old school best school.

You'r good if the rifle works. I have a new Marlin that is great. Even the new ones have a newhaven stamp. The old factory rifles will have a "JM" proof mark also.
