Okay, so I have been looking at getting a lever gun and found a used marlin 336 at a gun and pawnshop for $330. It's in good condition, and the action works well and I like the overall feel of the gun. It has see-through rings and a cheap scope on it that will probably be removed. My question is, is this a good deal?

yes it is a very good deal. if you can haggle it lower, much better but if they won't budge, then buy it. the 336 is an excellent lever action and will serve you well for shooting or hunting.

The Marlin 336 was my first gun and I wish I never sold it. Yeah, try to haggle but that's a pretty good price if the gun is in good shape. They're very good guns and very accurate.

My tower stand / soy bean field rifle was a Ruger Model 77 in 30.06.

My woods rifle was a Marlin 336 in .35. The Model 36 is my all time favorite deer rifle. Indestructible. Impervious to weather. Sweet action and trigger.

i have a 336 it is a great gun that does sound like a good deal especially if its in good shape.i would try to talk him down a few dallors just to see if i could

I assume that it is in .30-30? Yes, it is a decent buy. Previously owned Marlin 336's are becoming more and more desirable (and pricey) due to the sale of Marlin to Freedom Group and the move of Marlin manufacturing to the Remington facility where there have been numerous quality issues and few buyers who are 100% satisfied with their purchase of a Remlin/Marlington lever guns. At $330 you can easily recoup your investment if you decide that lever actions just aren't your thing but be careful, there is no cure for Marlinitis.

It's a great gun. I bought one in a pawn shop in WV last year with a cheap 3x9 scope with see through rings. I didn't get to use it until this spring. The first shot with open sights at a paper plate was about point of aim so I put the scope on the bullet hole and ran three shots with the scope. They were all within an inch. Cheap scopes don't matter with this gun, it's smooth and a good buy. Quality all the way. 30-30 is a great universal round as well. Enjoy.

By the way, if anyone here ever comes across a Marlin 336 in 35 Remington with the initials "JDR" carved on the pistol grip, that's the one I sold. I'd buy it back if I ever found it.

I've owned my Marlin 336, 30-30 since the late 60's and would never part with it. In the "ole days" a (scoped) carbine 30-30 was laughed at in my neck of the woods as this was considered a short range brush gun.
