How much play is there supposed to be in the op rod/charging handle? It seems that in mine there is a little bit of wiggle and I am able to move it around slightly. Is this a big deal/problem? I feel like there needs to be a little play but not sure.

The op rod has a small amount wiggle and play otherwise it would bind and the rifle would be inoperable. It rides in a groove on the side of the receiver and has a slot for the bolt roller. Main thing to remember is that the M1A runs on grease so keep it well lubricated as well as the op rod guide under the barrel.
