Hi everyone,
New to the forum and I have a ruger 10/22 and am just looking to upgrade to something bigger . Leaning more towards a bolt action 223 or 30-06. I'm really new to rifles and am currently doing some research but I thought I'd ask a few questions too.
What is the cheapest rifle ammo to buy? Besides a .22 lr. Any gun preference ? I am also looking at other types of ammo too so they don't have to be the ones I wrote above.

What are you going to use the rifle for? Plinking, go for the 223. Hunting, go for the 30-06. That is using the 2 rounds you listed. There are many more rounds out there to choose from. Cheapest rounds will be the 223/5.56x45, 7.62x39 Russian and 5.45x39 Russian. 308 Winchester/7.62x51 NATO is a very popular hunting and target round and probably a little cheaper to shoot than the 30-06.

Yeah just for plinking . Any suggestions on semi and or bolt action 223/556-45? What's the prices right now for bulk 223? 80$ for 300?

Rem 700 is always a nice bolt gun.

Marlin, Remington, Ruger, Savage all make what you seem to want and all are good rifles(and roughly the same price).

Sooner or later, you'll get the desire for an AR-15. Semi-auto, almost no recoil, very ergonomic, inexpensive ammo available everywhere.

Probably the most "fun" you can get.

If you hunt deer, it's legal in some states, but if it's not legal in yours, you can get upper assemblies in half a dozen larger calibers.

You will probably get several guns over the years, but you can't go wrong with the AR-15 first.
