Default Looking for a new rifle

I am now looking for a new rifle under $500. Either bolt action or semi-automatic. I will only be shooting up to 100 yds considering the only range I shoot at goes that far. I would also like to keep the ammo relatively cheap.

If that's your max distance, a 22 could suit you well and it's damn cheap too

True, but I already own a .22 and I was just looking for something bigger for SHTF situation. But do you have any other suggestions?

Well, To be honest, Milsurps are always nice
Also, like 303 said, The Savage line looks good, and a few members have had some experience with them, though I myself, have not(yet)

Assuming you are shooting with iron sights, I'd consider some Combloc stuff,

if you are inclined.

The SKS(@250$) shoots marginally better than an AK, and has a much more balanced,

solid feel, IMO. Only a 10 shot mag, tho. 7.62 x39 ballistics are @ on a par with

30-30, and are far cheaper in bulk.

The Mosin M44(@175$) has fair accuracy in a 5 shot, bolt action carbine,

and the ammo is @.20/round,in bulk, shipped, with the 7.62x 54R- 150 GR

ammo @ the same ballistics as a 30.06 Garand round.

BOTH come with built-in cleaning rods and built-in

bayonets! SHTF Beware...

These are both great range shooters. A lot of fun.

You can get a nice Mosin all fixed up for around $100, add an aftermarket synthetic stock and forearm, then a decent fixed scope and have a great shooter that will pack a punch at 250 yards for well under that.
