Long range 7mm Rem Mag or 338 Win mag

Im thinking of buying a new rifle, and im all over the place! I want a rifle that's long range, i wont be shooting more than 1000 yards, but also an all round rifle that's all round because i will be going big game hunting, including some big brownies. I use a 300 win mag as of now, i've shot the 338 win mags, the recoil isn't a big deal at all. While i know both those will do well for North American big game. I like the 7mm because of the long range, while i like the 338 win mag for the power.

> i am comfortable shooting 338 win mags at around 500 yards as of now i use my friends 338.
>i shoot 7mm rem mags at around 580 right now

--i know i will do better with both.

Whats your take on this? 7mm rem mag or 338 win mag?

Thank you!

It all depends...

What are you going to hunt? What are the general weather conditions? Is money a factor, vis-a-vis ammunition? Is scarcity of ammunition a factor? If you had to use your weapon for self defense, which caliber/weapon's system be best for you? Light to medium, like the 7mm Remington Magnum, or the .338 Winchester Magnum?

Game of deer sized, easily the 7mm, but remember, its ability to buck the wind is less than the .338 Winchester... Larger than deer? Definitely the .338 Winchester Magnum...

Don't know if this helps... Me, if were going to move up from my beloved 7.62X51s, I'd definitely go .338 Lapua- greater reach, to take-out targets/game to 1500 meters...

Glockcurmudgeon, out...

Have you checked the prices of the rounds? My old man has a 7mm rem mag and it's almost $30 for a box of 20 rounds, I enjoy shooting them but it really breaks the ammo budget. Just speaking from experience the 7mm mag isn't all that bad for long range, the longest distance I've ever shot it at was 650 yards. Really it's all personal preference, although winchester has a ballistic calc that is pretty interesting none the less.

Why 1000 yards? I practice as I hunt. 1000 yards is target rifle territory, not hunting rifle. A 500 yard shot at game is not for the average hunter. I get as close as I can. That is why it is hunting, not using game as targets. 7mm Rem Mag is a VG hunting round. But, on animals such as Elk, Great bear it is limited by the amount of energy it retains over distance. 400 yards is my personal max range as that is the point at which the 160gr bullet still has enough velocity and energy to do its' job ethically. The .338WM stretches that to 500 yards w/ a 180gr bullet. Reloading for the 7mm Rem Mag can be very cost effective. I've picked up Blemished Bullets (jacket color) from Midway as cheap as 17.00 per 100 and Barnes XFB when they changed the name to TSX for 17.00 per 50. I load from 120gr to 160gr. Covers most game in the CONUS. I still have 600..700 bullets of different flavors that I can load. A box of 20 costs me about $10.00 w/ a premium bullet. $7.50 for standard cup and core.

Why does self defense always come into the picture? Also anyone that shoots at game at 1000..1500 yards should loose their license. The .338 Lapua would be effective to a max of 700 yards on large game, It has 1496fp of retained energy w/ a 250gr sp at that range. The bench mark for Elk is 1500fpe.
1500 yards my azz. 700 yards would still be a stupid shot on game, too many variables. You would probably end up having a gut shot animal.

Glockcurmudgeon- i didnt mean the all round cartrdige, regarding self defense/protection, i just meant it as an all round hunting cartridge. However, you gave me an insight about other things the cartridge might be useful for and should be dependable in (such as weather conditions)

Muliemaster- i think so too :)

Jpattersonnh- You have given me a lot of info. The longest i've ever went with a 300 win mag was on a 8 point buck last white tail season. i shot it from 750 yards...i had a perfect shot placement, the buck ran for about 10-15 yards and dropped(i still think i got a lil lucky that day). However, i still got a 30 minute "fun" talk from my dad and grandpa. I just like to be ready for long shots, so i practice at the range for around 1000 yards. But you are right an ethical shot shouldn't ever be more than 500yards. Thank you for the info!

I fully agree with u, most hunters are not able to, nor should they ever take a shot at game over 250 to 300 yards in my opinion tho, most average hunters dont get the quality range time as others im blessed in that department, I have a full rifle range at the ranch I shoot nearly every day, I have a serious condition called rifleittis

Yes it built for long range, on game my longest shot with it ,was an antalope at 746 yards no wind,62degrees , would I do it again? To be honest no, if that goat took 1 step or made a turn, I would have made a terrible judgement call, I live by the code be true to what u love an hunt, a wounded animal makes me sick. Now as far as on paper, well I have made shots out to 1200 yards. Im not tryin to say I shot a 1 inch group tho. I can hit a dinner plate at 1200 yards 8 out of 10 not to bad, im sure there are others that think thats all, but im honest as far as ammo I reload using berger vld
