For range rifles ether look like a good place to start. The .223 will like a faster twist than the 1-9 for heavier bullets but should do well out to 400 to 600 yards with 68gr to 72gr. It should also preform better than the 308 and is more affordable to reload. Might want to look for more power in a scope for range work like a 6-24 . For a hunting rifle and scope , fine choices. Coyotes for the 223 , deer and larger for the 308. , if not a bit heavy. Scope is fine for hunting but a nicon might save some money and offer a wider power range. -http://www.opticsplanet.net/nikon-monarch-25-10x42-riflescopes.html The scope base you have markered is a long action base so watch that. You need a short.

I have just bought an FNH FNAR 308(7.62x51mm) light barrel and have been looking for a scope. Some of my friends have recommended a Vortex Crossfire 4-12x40 V-Brite. From what i have read it seems to be a good scope. I am open to any suggestions cause i have looked at nikon and leupold

I did some research too. Mostly recommended Leupold and Nikon.

Leupold dropped the VX3 3.5-10X with 40mm front and AO (adjustable objective) some time ago.
FWIW I wouldn't shoot varmints or targets without an AO scope.
Think you can get it (AO) in a 50mm front now, which I think sucks 'cause then you usually have to get high rings and then your face is up off the stock (most folks). So then you gotta add a cheekpiece.
I'd get the 4.5-14X with 40mm front and AO.
Since I don't adjust my scopes clickety click in the field I'm content with just a VX2 4-12X with AO.

Oh yeah, I usually run Weaver bases and Burris Signature Zee rings.
You spend that much for a scope, might as well use good rings that won't mark it up should you later want to move it to something else.

The crossfire is the entry level vortex, the warranty an repair on this model is the highest alot of returns on it, spend the extra 40$ step up to the diamondback, way better coatings an glass, also if u can afford it I recomend the viper line of scopes very high quality vortex opics. I have a vortex viper hs on a 243 an its crystal clear, an I mean crystal clear the dead hold bdc is great, low light is very good, I got it at my local gun shop for around 500$ I believe cant remember for sure. Side by side with a ziess conquest 4.5x14 I have I cant tell any optic difference at all.

Also why use the alum bases??? High quality leupold or burris bases are the way to go. Use good steel bases for those high quality burris rings. That way its steel on steel. That my thoughts tho, any quality scope needs the quality bases an rings
