One of my co workers has an old Mauser 98 his grandpa brought back from WW2. Its missing the firing pin and isn't able to fire (obviously). He doesn't know if there are any other problems. My question is, if a firearm has been de-miled (did I say that right?) or purposefully sabotaged by the govt, is it legal or possible to restore it to firing condition?

Second, is it legal for me to do the work fixing it if I'm not certified yet?

My first question is, does he have any verification that its a vet bring back? If its just missing the firing pin. Thats an easy fix, if its 'de-milled', it could have been cut, or it could have had the barrel leaded.

I'm by no means an expert, but pics would help tremendously.

Lots of Vets had the fireing pins removed when they were city dwellers. You can replace the pin and make sure the bore is free of obstruction or filed, another practice. Having the pin missing if it is a matching rifle is a big deal. It effects the worth a great deal. Every part of a K98k is numbered. Please post pics. I'm going to guess till him why you need the pictures; but I could be wrong.

There are quite a few questions that pics would help clarify. Most people feel a little weird having their firearms photographed and pictures posted to the web.

You do not need to be "certified" to work on a gun.
