I'll beg to differ a bit on that point. Point targets are still engaged at distances beyond 200 yds on a regular basis with iron sights. Also, prior to widespread issue of optics, doing this was the norm.
Not a combat scenario, but Marines are still required to qualify with iron sights at 200, 300, 500, and 600 yds. Optics can and do break. It's a good idea to know the basics of using iron sights.
I shoot iron sight matches out to 600 yds. Human torso sized groups are acheived pretty regularly.
would it be easier with a scope? Probably. But I wouldn't put the use of iron sights for ALL rifles into the blanket category of "Stupid".
