Sounds like a Savage with accutrigger in .223 will fill the bill. Good rifle, great accuracy and not too expensive to shoot.

A used or otherwise lower-end AR15 could be easily had within your budget, or you could go all the way down to a $200 Rossi single-shot in .223. Hell, a $200 10/22 with $400 in fun accessories might make you the happiest guy in the world. What kinds of rifles and shooting catch your eye, and what do you want to do / be able to do with it?

My most fun guns for the whole family are my 22LRs. I got a Henry

22 Lever gun for less than 300$ NIB that is very popular. 22LR is the cheapest ammo around, too.

Lots to choose from in your price range, if plinking is your goal.

Rent, rent, rent. Try a friend's guns. Take your time trying many larger calibers

before you choose something bigger.

I'd say it depends what you want to use it for...personall I would say a Remington 700 adl or Winchester model 70 in .223, .308 or .30-06

Is this your first gun? My vote is a .22lr. It's fun, not to much recoil and has cheap ammo. You can also pick one up for a pretty good price.

If you want a high caliber rifle might I suggest a Mosin Nagant. Now it kicks a little but because it weighs like 10 lbs. it isn't that bad. Defiantly invest in a rubber butt plate. The reason why I like this gun so much is because it is accurate and the ammo is cheap. You are looking at about 0.20 to 0.25 a round if you buy a big ole ammo can at a gun show.
Since it is bolt action it will slow you up on ammo consumption.
Just my opinion.

I got my AR for 200 bucks my buddy was hurting for money but not everyone can get lucky. That being said I seen at Cabelas they had a bushmaster carbon for 699 an it comes with a bushnell red dot and a collapsable stock. I have the same rifle, I just added a few things and I have fired several thousand rounds with no problems here is a pic. For ya.
