Default Johnson rifle

Has anyone ever heard of a Johnson rifle? I worked the Kane County gun show this last Sunday and one came thru. My job is to check all firearms that come thru to assure that they are not loaded. I have seen some pretty unique firearms come thru the doors (Kane County is in N.illinois for those that didn't
know.I understand is was made back in the 1940's and not many were ever made.

I believe the Johnson was a "semi auto" that was competing against John C. Garands rifle for the US Military Contract Rifle.

Many thought the Johnson was superior but it's glaring flaw, "to Military procurement folks" was that it required "lubricated" ammunition to function reliably... and greasy rounds don't do too well in the field.

Did it look like this?

It was a Semi-auto in 30.06 and if I recall the Marines took a long hard look at it before settling on the M1 to maintain commonality with the Army.

Did Not buy it.

Tack- watch it- or I'll whack you with my walker- again.

Johnson weapons system was interesting- in testing, story was that the mag on one test wepon got dented, resulting in fail to feed- and it was downhill from there.

Hi, I was told that this had a rotary magazine system, and as I mentioned earlier not many were ever made. Was it finicky in use? Some say that it needed lubed cartridges?

It was featured years ago on a History Chanel mini series called "History of the Gun". Yes, it required "lubricated" ammo, which any grunt will tell you is a recipe for disaster.
