I agree pretty much the Mosin is a great simple dependable gun-
Again the sheer size puts me off-
BUT i've allways thought the CALIBER shuld be the major deciding factor on a Bug Out rifle (HD dont much matter)

Afterall a mear mortal man can only tote so many rds of ammo- I figure if some of us had to play like the cast of Red Dawn wud we be able to "acquire" ammo for a Mosin at any mom 'n pop hardware store? I figure I could get 22LR, 30-30, 30'06, most likely 308 & good chance 223
Bottom line i want (& have at the ready) a lightweight BOLT action rifle with scope AND useable iorn sights in several of the mentioned calibers
Just my 2 bits--

HOSS, you totally get my general direction. I eventually want a semi-auto .308 battle rifle to pair up with my AR-15. AND I'd want a really nice bolt-action scoped deer rifle, probably also .308 for simplicity.

But with a limited budget right now, I'm just wondering what would be best for the short term.

As far as "self-defense" I am not thinking hallway action. That is strictly my shotgun and .45 1911. I'm thinking this scenario: There is a zombie gang at the end of my street and I am up on my roof. Different SD picture, huh?

Cane, you'd go with a cheaper Savage combo with a detachable box before a Mosin? Interesting... Thanks for the 10-14.

I got a Mosin. (@$69 doesn't everyone?)

I want a .308 bolt gun and don't need to spend a lot for a gun that will shoot better than me!

I'm not sure I could see a goblin >200 meters much less hit him.

I wouldn't buy one of the damn things when they were first imported for 9 bucks.

Like Hossfly, I picked my wife up a mossberg atr100 in 30.06, put a cheap $60 center point 4-16x42 scope on it for her and it is a tack driver in its own respect, I bought it at walmart and with the scope I may have $350 in it, ammo is kinda pricey but in a SHTF situation you would be able to find it as it is a common caliber, and it will take down any game animal in north america. We have had it out to 300 yds, and it will do 3.5-4 inch groups all day long.

See, here we go again. Every hunting action is based on a Military action, every one. So you see, you've bought one of those damb things already. Just put in a sexier package. Even though a rifle may have a scope, if the SHTF the 1st thing that will break is the scope making the rifle pretty much useless without iron sights. At the battle of Belleau Wood in 1918, The U.S. Marines were shooting Germans at 700 yards w/ '03 Springfields and iron sights. Every single German sniper rifle in WWII had see through mounts to use iron sights. Every Com-Bloc sniper also has see through mounts. The OP has the right idea. With a modern hunting rig, you damage the scope, your done.

Here's what this thread is making me think:

a) I eventually want a battle rifle [M1A ($1500), AR-10 ($1100 plus optic), or M1 Garand ($900)] that isn't bolt-action and internal box. At least the M1 uses clips.

b) I definitely want iron sights, so each of those are still okay. But the scoped hunting rifle is not looking so good anymore. If scoped, it still needs iron sights, which means the AR-10 isn't looking quite so good since they are generally scoped on a flat-top.

c) I want long-range, but iron sights from a solid position should, with practice, be acceptable for GetOuttaMyNeighborhood sorta distances.

d) One of the above battle rifles could definitely still be used for hunting big game, if necessary.

e) I'm not sure I want to spend hundreds of dollars for a rifle that will be replaced later. But if I did, I think I'd want to make sure it is the same caliber as my future battle rifle. Thus, I would need to choose now whether .308 (M1A and AR-10) or .30-'06 (M1 Garand).

f) I can't imagine my wife ever being happy about me spending $1600 for a Springfield M1A Scout, so I think the M1 Garand is in my future!

g) I should either scrounge the $900 for an acceptable M1 Garand right NOW or stick with a $130 Mosin 91/30 as a stop-gap rifle until I save up. Spending $400 for a cheap hunting rifle isn't the best way to get to a battle rifle, for me.

h) I think I have decided to WAIT until I can buy an M1 Garand for under a grand and stick to .30-'06 soft-points in a bunch of en-bloc clips.

Thoughts?
