If a scope is mechanically zeroed at a 100 yard zero, about how much MOA travel will a scope need to comfortably reach out to 500 yards? I want to make sure I can get a scope with enough MOA travel to reach out that far and not have to use a canted scope base..

.308 in a 20" barrel if that helps

Get a fixed optic with a mildot reticle and you can go all the way to 600 with a .308 based on the mildots.

Its a lot of heavy reading and some math.

Or a cheat sheet with a slider.

Cool.
But I'd rather have some variable power...

Sooo...about how much MOA travel will I need to reach out to 500-600 yards with a 0 MOA scope base?

Depends upon the bullet and velosity, 165..168gr class at 2700fps, 12.3moa or 49 clicks. With a cheap scope, it will be hard to rely on the accuracy of the adjustments.

Cool. I was just looking for a ballpark.. The scope I'm looking at only has about 60 MOA (30 up and 30 down). And if I needed more than that to reach out that far than I'd probably look for a different scope.

a scope with a 40moa total adjustment on a typical 308 will get you to 600 yards before it bottoms out. it will leave you 2.5 moa or about 10 clicks of elevation if your needing to come up for zero at 100.

just refrain from letting anyone "bore sight" for you. do it yourself so you can record how much you need to come up or down from mechanical zero.
