I have a M1A SOCOM 16. I guess it's kind of a general purpose rifle.

It's really not a rifle though.....

Here it is with a Leupold FX II 2.5x28mm scout scope

There is no single rifle that can do everything you want to do well. That is why most people have several rifles.

How about an AR in 6.5 Grendal?? Accurate and reliable rifle, but in (IMO) one of the best calibers ever.

Rifles are not like kitchen detergents they are not all purpose. Each one is built with a specific purpose. Mostly buyer appeal so you will buy it. It is simple what ever you like the most will become your favorite "Take Along" rifle. And you will claim it is the best all around rifle available.

The FAL is a fine rifle. Although it is kinda heavy. And 308 ammo is not cheap.
I wish I hadn't sold mine.

As great as 7.62/308 is( and I own two M1's) it can not approach the energy the 300win mag can at ranges beyond 700 yards. I'm told most of the Navy/Marine snipers are using them for about 20 years already, if not more.
