If for competition out to 1000 yards, I'd go with a short action in a caliber of 6mm or 6.5 mm flavor. There are bullets of these calibers with excellent Ballistic Coefficients which are more than enough to get past 1000 yards before going subsonic. The .260 Rem. (6.5X51mm), for example, has near the same exterior ballistic characteristics as the .300 WM. to just past 1100 yards. The .243 Win. (6X51mm) can be an excellent long range target performer too.

yeah iirc its like $18k for the whole package quite steep if i say so myself. I just wanna shoot one though thing looks like a beast and they claim the round is effective out past 3,500 meter, but you would damn near have to be a robot to shoot that far

If your just starting out in this long range stuff I would stay with .308 Win. as match ammunition is plentiful with less expense in this caliber and with the 175 grain BTHP, up to 1000 yards is doable. Good to learn on and the increased difficulty at distance with this caliber makes you have to be a better shot.

If we're talking affordable rifles here and not one to shoot something at 2 miles away, it's hard to beat a Remington Varmint SPS. Heavy 26" barrel, mine is in .308. They cost around $600. Not the greatest stock on them, spend about $400 more for a McMillan or H-S and slap a good scope on it, and you have an accurate rig that will get out to 1000. If you've never shot at 1000 yards before, it is a long ways off. Mine, with the cheap stock, and a Vortex 4-12x temporarily on it , shot this group (orange diamond target) with one of the first loads I've tried in it. (Nosler brass, Hornady 168 gr. Match and 43.0 grains of IMR-4895). Had I not pulled one to the left, it would have run less than a 1/2" center to center. And this one from another forum member, same rifle with aftermarket laminated stock, and Federal GMM factory loads. He pulled one out of the group as well. Both targets 5 shots at 100 yards. These rifles are much more accurate than the guy behind the trigger.

This is a concept in flux, for me, right now.

I got an AR with a long sight radius which has been throwing

promising groups.

I did my research, and got the rifle, with a great scope, but

even though I have done a lot of hunting/glassing with the scope,

I haven't actually pulled the trigger, or zeroed it at the range yet.

So I don't want to start crowing and blathering about how great

it is, until I verify what I think and hope I know.

I'll post back in a couple of weeks, hopefully with a great review, and

very satisfactory results.

It can be any rifle for any purpose for YOUR personal use.

Trez that is winner. Anyone who thinks that is a fragile inaccurate set up has never really used this set up.

The answer to that question is undoubtedly a laser, unfortunately they are too bulky and pretty expensive currently (not necessarily illegal in NY yet). Axxe brought up the other characteristics I would consider. Distance, stopping power and accuracy are all factors in what you want to use to "Reach out and Touch Someone". You want the best of all worlds, the XM2010 seems like a pretty good choice but a bit tough to come by in NY if your not 10th Mountain!

Accuracy is also a relative term! The Mk 19 wasnt considered the most accurate weapon Ive ever fired but accurate enough if your in the Burst radius and I can walk it in on you (3 rounds or less)! You may have a harder time pinpointing a single person but unless you sniping, who cares? They are a bit heavy also, so is the ammo, you might better have a M203 on the bottom of a AR and a good satchel unless you can move mounted with a squad!

Speaking of AR's--As a great all around weapon accurate to nearly 500 meters stock out of the box without optics, you cant beat the AR platform, just takes some getting used to the sights if you learned on traditional Iron sights. Ive shot 40 out of 40 a bunch of times qualifying on the popups with some pretty well worn M16's, not bad for a standard issue weapon with no enhancements whatsoever.

There are just so many choices out there (unless your a NYer) its really hard to pick just one! If I had to pick just one, It would be a tossup between my Ithaca Featherlight with the additional Buck-buster barrel or my grandaddies old Model 11 12 Gauge. They both kick ass and speak for themselves very well and I dont have to choose, I have both of them and a few others that are more long distance shooters, my heart and soul will always be in the shotgun...

I thought the OP (and everyone else) were talking about accurate rifles, not grenade launchers and shotguns. ??????
