It appears to be an old MG-34 and that is NOT how one usually shoots it.

Yup. German beltfed. Appears to be missing one rather important part.
Doesn't have a barrel installed.

Good catch Bill. No barrel. Looks intimidating but keeps the tyrants safe from the troops.

Damn, good eyes bill.

I guess it could likely fire, but the kind of damage you would do to the front of the weapon is going to start at bad and quickly approach catastrophic.

Hmmm---I think it is actually a MG-42. The 34 didn't have those oval
holes in the barrel shroud.

It doesn't have a barrel installed in the picture, but for those that don't know,
the barrel on a MG-42 (or 34) can be changed in seconds. REALLY neat
feature on a aircooled beltfed, especially one with the cyclic rate of the 42.

Scroll down a bit, there is a pic of the barrel swung out for changing. Flip[
it out to the right, jerk the old one out, slam a new one in, latch it back
in place.

Modern Firearms - MG 42 and MG 3 machine gun

It also looks like it is missing the front sight.......
Unless that model just doesn't have one.

42 is the evolution of the 34. Easier/faster/cheaper to manufacture,
higher cyclic rate, better able to function in the dirt/dust/mud of the
battlefield. They pretty much got it right---it's still in service as the
MG 3.

Front sight. Folding. It's down in the OP's pic.
