I was Grendel, Ruiner of Meadhalls, Wrecker of Kings!

...and now a personal friend of SAMMI!

In case you folks haven't heard (ok, this was announced a couple weeks ago, maybe I'm the last to know), the popular-but-ostracized 6.5mm Grendel cartridge has now been accepted by SAMMI and all trademark claims by Alexander Arms has been released :clapping: (Full linky here: Alexander Arms released 6.5mm Grendel Trademark - AR15.COM ).

I'm pretty durn excited about this! This is about as close to a "one caliber" rifle round as you'll get, unless you're hunting squirrels (or unless you disagree with the versatility of the Grendel round :p )

Here's an image comparing the 6.5 Grendel between a 7.62 and a 5.56, the two common military rounds now:

You can find a bunch of charts on velocities, wind drift, etc here: Weaponeer.net Forums: 6.5 Grendel AR Conversion information

This post is NOT meant to start a caliber comparison war. I'm sharing this because the adoption of this caliber has, in the past, been hindered by the trademark claims of Alexander Arms.

As for me, I have a nice lower with a Timney trigger that's just ACHING for a Grendel upper :D

lkd,

I have a Sabre Defence 18" Comp/Varmint 6.5 Grendel w/ Leupold 3.5X10 50mm and 30mm tube. I am here to tell you it is one great long range accurate caliber, with great ballistics coefficient and performance. Here is a picture of it! That is exciting information. Bill has came up with some good calibers but I think the Grendel is one of his best. I forget the other gentleman that was a co-designer of the round.
Can not wait to see pics of your Grendel when you get it completed.

its an interesting idea, but what does it mean for the rest of us??

does this mean someone will start making factory ammo cheaper?? or more case availibilty?? my take is its still in the same boat as the 450 bushmaster 50 beowulf and 458 socom. great niche bullet but doubtful to ever be more than that.

ive got 2 niche rounds i shoot the 460 rowland and 458 socom, so im not scared off by lack of support from big ammo makers. ive got more brass from both than im liekly to ever really need.

but i dont think its a one gun round. it lacks the weight to get it done on thick skinned game. a .26cal just isnt enough weight. even 308 is marginal in a lot of hunting of things bigger than whitetail because it doesnt do well with 200+ grain bullets.

just saying there is a lot more to bullets than the BC. BC is everything in target shooting and to some extent military style sniping.

i like the idea of a harder hitting AR15 especially ones loaded with a hornady A-Max!! ive been keeping my eye on this round and a few others for a mid level AR upper.

oh and does the grendel use unmodded ar mags?? thats very important to me
