Mosin info...

Don't rely on the cut on the back of the bolt to get proper firing pin protrusion, you really should get the multi-tool, that should have come with the rifle...the notches on the edge of the tool are your gauge, easy peasy...

This rifle was made for illiterate Russian peasants to use and maintain so I wouldn't worry too much about damaging it...

Thanks, that's extremely helpful.

Could someone please explain the rear sight? It's numbered 1-20, each number raising the barrel a little, but I don't know what distance it's incremented in.

Meters. And no, you are not going to hit one man at 2000 meters. WAY back when, there was a practice of using massed rifle fire against an AREA target at very long ranges. That might be a tightly clustered group of 50 men.

Going back before the 91/30, Russians used a measure called the Arshin. A single pace, about 2 1/3 feet.

Hey, man, you never know, I could be some stupidly accurate marksman. I'm not (as far as I know), but I could then.

Hey wait, if it goes in increments of ten, then the first mark is ten meters, meaning that the bullet starts to drop after ten meters, or else you would not need to elevate the barrel...

Wait, no, I did the math wrong, it's 100 meters not ten... I was wrong. Sorry.

You need the Kit or at least the tool. If you line up the notch with the marks doesn't mean the firing pin protrusion is proper. This is very important. Too much protrusion could penetrate the primer and cause bodily harm. Not enough, it won't fire.

Found a nifty little tutorial for those new to the Mosins...

Scroll down a bit and it has pics of how to use the notches in the multi-tool to check firing pin protrusion

dteed is right on the money about too much/too little protrusion...Either no boom, or KA-Boom, the former just ain't no fun and the latter will ruin your day...probably your face too...

http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/2011/03/ralph/ralph%E2%80%99s-guide-to-buying-your-first-mosin-nagant-9130-pt-2/

If yours didn't come with the 'goodie bag'...ammo pouches, sling, multi-tool, cleaning tools, it may not be a bad idea to go ahead and order that stuff. It really comes in handy. You don't want to ding up the crown of the muzzle with that steel cleaning rod...(a cleaning 'collar'/rod guide comes with the kit) and the ammo pouches work great at the range with the stripper clips...
