Default I got a new rifle, but I need a little help with information.

I got an new, old (some may say antique) rifle, a World War Two Mosin Nagant M91/30 7.62 X 54R, and I've learned just about all I could about it. I've figured out how to fully disassemble the bolt, how to use the range finder, and how to load and fire it. There is a lot I can't find on the internet though, like a single way that a majority of people agree on for how to clean it. Anything that anyone can tell me on care for it and how to use it would be much appreciated, specifically, though, on how to clean it, and if there is such a thing as a stripper clip for one. I have found what appear to be guides for a stripper clip going into the internally contained magazine, but I'm not sure. If there is such a thing, then a place to get one would also be nice. Thanks. Oh, and also... I GOT MY FIRST GUN! And now, I am very happy.

This is the rifle. Sorry, I couldn't help it, the bolt was teasing me.

numrich had stripper clips, not sure if they are still in stock. Stripper clips can be found on ebay from time to time. I use CLP to clean a 91/30 just like any other rifle. If you shoot milsurp ammo you need to flush the barrel with a water and ammonia mixture.

When you put the bolt back together there is a no go gauge built into the tear down tool that came with the rifle to set the firing pin. There is a tutorial on setting the firing pin and using the no go gauge here. http://www.milsurps.com/content.php

I don't know anything about that, it was a rifle from World War Two, built by the soviets for use in the war, and at some point stored in oil, and possibly used to kill some nazis. There was no gauge with it, just the rifle, the bayonet, and what I assume was an owners manual written in Russian. I have no gauge... Please tell me I did not just ruin my rifle...

If you have the screwdriver, here is how to use the FP Gauge. If you don't, protrusion should be (I think) between .07 and .09 .

Re: Cleaning- initial cleaning to remove storage preservative grease- there are dozens of ways. I like using orange GOOP handcleaner, soft nylon brush, scrub, flush with hot water, dry well, light oil.

If you have been shooting milsurp corrosive primed ammo, important item is WATER. Those primers produce a salt that dissolves in water, not in oil. I remove bolt, put rifle in padded vise, muzzle tipped down at a 45 degree angle, bucket under muzzle, Use funnel that fits into chamber, pout 1 qt of HOT water thru barrel, 2 drops Dawn dish detergent on bore brush, scrub bore from the chamber end at least 30 seconds, pour another quart of HOT water thru barrel, let drain for 5 minutes. Wipe down bolt face with damp cloth, dry while you are waiting. Run a dry patch thru bore, followed by an oily patch. Wipe down bolt with oily cloth. Done.

There is a little grove on the back of the pin that, when I got the rifle, was lined up with two little marks above and below the hole were the pin goes into the back of the bolt to hold it in. Would it make sense to say that if I line that grove up with the two marks that it should be properly in position?

I found a stripper clip, but it comes with an entire kit, and all I need is a simple stripper clip. Does anyone know where I can get just a stripper clip alone?

Stripper clips...

Mosin info...

http://www.7.62x54r.net/

Don't rely on the cut on the back of the bolt to get proper firing pin protrusion, you really should get the multi-tool, that should have come with the rifle...the notches on the edge of the tool are your gauge, easy peasy...

This rifle was made for illiterate Russian peasants to use and maintain so I wouldn't worry too much about damaging it...
