Hunting rifle

I bought a new hunting rifle a month or so ago chambered in .338 Winchester magnum. I love the .338 and i used a .338 lapua magnum for the last few years but 4 and 5 dollars a shot is starting to limit the rounds that gun sees. Just thought Id post on here to see what all of you thought of the .338 win mag as a hunting rifle since I've yet to use it against any deer elk or bear here in PA.

.338 Win Mag is PLENTY of gun for ANYTHING in the lower 48 and certainly not underpowered for Alaska.

It could be considered too much gun for most applications in the lower 48.

.338 mag is overkill in the lower 48. Whitetail and Eastern Black bear, way too much.

If I could only have (God forbid) one hunting rifle to cover all North America game up to Brown bear in Alaska it would be a .338 WinMag.

Well I have two friends that live in Alaska and I usually go up there at least once every two years to hunt. So I definitely needed something for the much larger game. As far as deer I was curious as to how it would perform. After this year I'll probably go back to my 270 or 30-06. Much cheaper to shoot.

If you reload the 338 may be the all around bestest ever. I used to load a 225 gr over 64 gr of h-4350 and was pushing about 2600+ which is not too powerful for just about any game.

I reload just about everything lol. Anything to save a bit of money only to put it back into another gun.

Rothey10,
I like the 338 Win. Mag. also. But for White Tail like me with my 7mm Rem Mag plan on loosing a lot of meat especially the shoulder area at close ranges. I hunt Texas so the 7mm Mag. is good for long shots. But in close 100-150 yards on White Tails I have lost a lot of meat. I will be doing some deer hunting in the 150 yard range this year due to terrain and I am going to use my O6 with the proper bullets for the task. But I will be in Texas again also this year and the 7mm Mag. will be with me. Where I hunt 250-400 yard shots are common.

Where I hunt my stand overlooks a large field where I can get shots off up to about 700 yards before it starts getting too thick to see into.
