howdy-from a newb
some years ago i hunted with a pre 64 win mag .264. i liked it a lot and i'd like to find one or something like it. maybe a .260 rem or a 6.5x55 tikka, savage, win or rem. nobody seems to build them anymore. if anyone can point me in the right direction, i'd appreciate it. thanks

Dew, welcome aboard.
Are you seeking a new or used rifle? If you liked your pre-64 Winchester model 70 and price is not much of an issue, you may want to look at a new model 70. From what I have read, since Winchester licensed Fabrique Nationale to produce model 70s in SC the quality of the rifle is back to pre-64 levels, or even better.

thank you joe. i've talked to winchester about their new issues and it seems that the .264 isn't among them. if i understand correctly, from somewtime in the 1990s until 2005 they remade them, but stopped. either new or used would be ok.

The 264 WM was a great caliber,but it got labeled as a barrel burner early on,and never took off.
The 260 Rem is a good caliber,but if you reload the brass sucks. A 6.5X47 Lapua or 6.5 Creedmoor is basically the same as the 260 Rem,and most shooters prefer them because you can get good brass to reload.
The 6.5X55 has always been a superb caliber,it's been called europe's version of a 30/06.

from what i've been able to learn, it appears that the 6.5x55 is the closest to the .264 wm and therefore it would be my preference. but at this point, my understanding of the x06, x08, x47 and x55 is not real clear. as far as reloading goes, that's a ways down the road; i think it would be very satisfying to be involed in though.

Dew, when a caliber is expressed with an X between 2 numbers (9x18) the first number is diameter in millimeters. Second number is case length- in millimeters. European way. So a 7.62x39 round is a .30 caliber that has a 39mm casing. (SKS, AK47) A 7.62x51 is a .308, and a 7.62x54 is a 30-06.
