Default Howa 1500 .22-250

I was wondering if anyone could help me out with the pros and cons of a Howa 1500 22-250. I am looking to use it for my varmit gun. I hear you can convert them to hold detachable magazines up to 10 rounds. Smart investment? Any input would help.
Thanks,
Riley

I know my local Academy had one, not sure if they still do. I haven't been there in awhile

LegacySports is the importer of Howa and they sell the detachable magazine conversion.

I have experience with a heavy barrel Howa and it's a tack driver but it's also very heavy. I would not accurate hunting from an unsupported position due to the weight of the gun. I have no experience with the conversion kits.

Do most states have restrictions on the number of rounds loaded while hunting or is it just Maryland?

The Howa 1500 is the same action as the Weatherby Vanguard (Howa makes the actions for Weatherby in Japan, then Weatherby finishes them and mount them in their stocks in the US). The Vanguard S2 has a three position safety and true two-stage trigger, as does the latest Howa 1500. Yes, the Howa in short action can take a detachable five or 10 round magazine. The Weatherby S2 in long action also has an available detachable magazine. If you are looking at the Howa, you may want to see the Vanguard S2. I bought the S2 and the fit & finish is great, and the trigger breaks like glass. Both rifles are pretty heavy compared to their competitors.

Here are the Vanguard and Howa websites:
