There was a man once upon a time who supposedly hunted all the different dangerous game in Africa with a .30-06. I'll google it and see if I can find more info.

Is a 155MM HE/WP and option? If not .50 always works for me.

Here's a link where an outfitter I guess is saying that the .30-06 is perfectly adequate in most cases while hunting in Africa.

Beyond that, original question is "how much power do you like?"

I like as much as I can handle and afford. If I had the money for one of those 20mm rifles, I'd already have it.

I do not expect to ever hunt outside of North America.

I would have no issues with my Win. Model 70 chambered in .300 H&H Mag.
to drop anything on this continent.

.308 caliber bullets would be on the low end of the scale for hunting large
brown (Grizzley/Yukon) bear or polar bear but the Inuits (sp?) do it with
smaller calibers regularly. I would not have a problem with an appropriate
bullet; 220 grain Nosler partition or a heavy solid bullet designed for thick
skinned dangerous game.

Bell shot hundreds of Elephants w/ 7x57 and dropped them, does not make it a smart move.
I looked at your link, they talked medium plains game, not dangerous game. In most of Africa .375 is the minimum, 9.3x62 (.366) is the exception. You can not legally hunt dangerous game w/ anything smaller then a 9.3x62 in Africa. TR hunted plains game w/ his .30 U.S., we use to go to his house on L.I. and the north room was full of plains game trophies.
Sagamore Hill National Historic Site - Theodore Roosevelt's Home (U.S. National Park Service)
In part one it shows him inspecting a rifle he was giving as a gift. It was a double rifle that would have been .50 or larger. If you injure dangerous game, they will surely kill you.
