I'm aware of that. I guess I should have specified I meant non-human threats, like a varmint.

Someone in my house is going down, outside they will definitely put whatever they came for on the back burner at the sound of the first shot. We have too many home invasions that end up with dead innocent people in the area. I intend to be a live victim if I must be a victim!

outside the home, non-human problems are usaully still dealt with a shotgun around my house. even though i live in a very rural area and using a rifle wuld pose no danger to anybody, i still prefer my shotguns.

Below is what happened to a critter attempting to raid the chicken house.

Shotguns don't cut it for outside the house in my case.....and for a whole list of reasons.

Distance being one. ( A hog at 566 yards)

I might be a bit biased towards a rifle, and namely the M14 types, as this is what I prefer to use at work. ( Note: Soldier in photo aint me.)

Last week my cousin and I did sort of a face off between his AK and my shotgun for the fun of it...but at the end of the vid that i'm linking, you see that neither is better, but they work best as a team!

I have a 357 mag lever gun I am considering to keep handy. It don't quit have the range of the 30-30, but I seldom have to pop yotes much more as they have got the message now I think!

From a tactical stand point, a rifle can do anything a shotgun can (CQB) but the reverse is not true as the shotgun has a VERY limited range. If you have to chose just one chose the rifle!
