Default home defense question

can you defend yourself with your family members firearm if you live in the same home?
scenario: home alone, hear a noise in house. you find out a dudes breaking in and you notice he has a pistol on him . you grab your fathers rifle and defend yourself....can it be his rifle or when defending yourself, it has to be your firearm?
im in California if this affects anything

I think in your scenario, legalities are rather moot.

It means it doesn't matter. I heard someone say once upon a time that I'd rather be tried by 12 than carried by 6. I pretty much think that sums it up.
