That's pretty much it, but it's also about taking advantage of the situation at hand. I squirrel hunt with a .22mag because my squirrel hunting spot is on state land. We can't hunt with center fire rifles on state land after deer season so that only leaves rimfires or bird shot in a shotgun. A .22 mag (head shots) still lets me get a hog if I run across one while squirrel hunting. Plus we have some pretty big fox squirrels running around. If I'm just hog hunting in a swamp on private land after deer season I'm using my mini14 just because it's fun to open up on a heard with a semi automatic. During deer season I strictly deer hunt but if a big hog steps out then it will catch a .303, .308, or a 30-06. It just depends on what I'm deer hunting with.

Whatever can penetrate the skull. That about sums it up. Living in Florida, we hunt hogs, and damn near everyone I know hunts hogs. Alot of guys I know us as small as .22 mag, I prefer 5.56, or 30/30. But as long as you can hit your POA, anything that can penetrate skull will do.
