I recently purchased a Russian 91/30 Mosin Nagant, year 1942.

The rifle cycles live rounds beautifully. I don't have the "sticky bolt" issue others experience, especially after removing the bolt and cleaning the rifle. However, after firing a round, the extractor fails to remove the casing from the chamber. After removing the casing, the rifle continued to cycle live rounds perfectly but for every single round I fired, the casing found itself stuck in the chamber. The bolt opens fine, but the casing stays up in the barrel. Does anyone have any ideas as to what would cause the extractor to fail after firing the round, when it works perfectly fine beforehand?

It sounds like you either need to replace the extractor, or have a rusty chamber. A rusty chamber would allow the unfired, undersized cartridges to cycle normally, but upon firing the case swells against the sides of the chamber, causing sticky extraction. You likely need an extractor as it does the job with no stress on it but won't extract the fired case which requires more force or grip if you will.

What kind of ammo are you using? They wernt removed from links were they?

sounds like a dirty chamber and or bad ammo. I would give it a good looking over. If you know someone with a bore scope take a look see at the chamber.

I took time this past weekend to check the rifle over, and I can't spot any rust in the chamber. I'm using Brown Bear 7.62x54r 203 gr. ammunition I bought from Gander Mountain. While checking for rust I did notice a large buildup of (for lack of better words) gunk in the groove where the extractor head would fit. It seems like it may be leaking over into the chamber itself. Perhaps removing this could help clear up my situation?
