I agree on the 10/22. If you want to go .223 or 5.56mm a Mini-14.

ok thanks everyone ive narrowed down to 10/22 , sks , mini 14( if i find one cheap enough) heres my reasons for considering each
10/22:reliable,cheap ammo, affordable, lots of different stocks and mods, cheap mags, the bmf activator seems like a cool add on,accurate
sks:forgiving/reliable,lots of mods and stocks avail.,larger caliber,pretty decent accuracy(from what ive heard),cheap
mini 14: accurate,reliable,larger caliber,

U can definitely strike "accurate" off of your Mini-14 list.

but what about some remington rifles? r they any good? like the 597 vtr ?

whats better ruger 10/22 or remington 597(any model in similar price range to 10/22)
i love the colors the remington comes in and the vtr is really cool looking (quad rail) but those are just looks im not sure about performance .
and the remington can shoot magnums idk if thats a feature on the 10/22 or not but i think its pretty cool

I actually like the 597 but I don't trust Remington anymore since all their corporate management issues and poor quality control in their shotguns. Plus it doesn't compare to the legacy of the 10/22. As for the Rem able to "shoot magnums too," u must be confusing things -- has to be two different guns (unless the chamber is not part of the barrel which I'm pretty sure isn't the case).

No kidding. You can get a lot better rifle than a Mini-14 for the same money.
