damn 300 win mag is 22$ for a box of 20! thats like 1.10$ a round.Ill proaably get a smaller caliber because thats pretty damn expensive to shoot.Ill probably go with a 308.

Ya as a kid, I don't think bolt actions ever taught me to use my ammo "wisely"

Now that I buy my own ammo, I use my ammo "wisely". Ya those bigger calibers make you flinch when you whip out your wallet!

Which is why I always smile when doing a magdump off my .22lrs.

Well fellas, I defy anyone to find where I said that per se, however, yes, a bolt-action is a better choice for a new shooter, most especially a young one, to learn how to shoot properly. My professional opinion. That includes as a uniformed, gun-totin', shield wearing, butt-kickin' instuctor of shaved-head shavetails and other professionals who hoped to stand in my place someday.

If you don't get it, Johnny, that's OK. Repeat after me: "It's not over -- nothing's over! You just don't turn it off."

Beast -- get a .22 Mag bolt action rifle already.

Good luck.

Default My Advice is the 1022

I have owned over 50 firearms in my life and made the full circle from 22 competition to 600 yards using the ar 15. I agree with the advice many here have written in. I have an sks, ammo is going to be expensive and the triggers are awful but fun guns. I had a mini 14 , it would hit a barn if you were in the barn when you fired it. I was sad about that one. It was so well made but accuracy was not there. I just took my 552 Remington speedmaster and my Ruger 1022 out last weekend. They also (Ruger) as come out with a breakdown 1022 that the barrel comes off. If you want a little more power I would highly recommend a 22 magnum in the Marlin line. They have a 20 groove barrel , are extremely accuracte and give you a choice in bullet weights from the 30 grain Hornady V Max to the 50 grain Federal round. Ammo is more expensive but you would not be sorry. I am not sure but I think they are around 239.00 and come with the scope mounts or you can use the dovetail groove cut into the receiver and use 22 rings. Hope this helps answer some of your questions, but if you are on a budget the 1022 using bulk 22 ammo is the best bet and then later on move up in caliber.

I can understand Hocka's reason for the bolt action, but hey... it's a .22. A 22 can be the most fun gun you have. Go for the semi-auto if you want. Ruger 10/22, Marlin 60, S&W AR15-22 (my rifle) are all great guns.

If you want a centerfire rifle, I'd recommend an AR in 223/5.56. It will run you quite a bit more than the .22.
Let me see, how about 17 .22's is that enough?

I suggest you start a new thread. This question can be far afield from the original question of this thread.
