I have to agree with a previous poster. The idea that the .308 or .30-06 are poor choices for deer is absurd. Both are highly popular deer cartridges which successfully harvest many deer each year.
This also brings up the topic of bullet selection (as opposed to cartridge selection). It's true that a FMJ or other stoutly constructed bullet might drill straight through a lightly build deer, doing minimal damage and possibly allowing the animal to escape and die later. Well designed modern hunting bullets however should quickly drop a deer with propped shot placement, even using magnum cartridges even "fastest" than the .308 or .30-06 are.
