Good deer rifle?

What's a great deer hunting rifle? Im thinking about buying a browning 270 short mag. Is this a good rifle do you guys know of a better rifle?

Really depends on the area and terrain you hunt in. I prefer a 308 but that is me. A 30/30 works great for heavy woods hunting not to mention it has taken more game animals then any other caliber. But it has been around for ever. The 270 is a great caliber.

I have a weatherby vanguard in 270 win and it is a great round. Ive taken a few nebraskan whitetails and an oklahoman boar hog with it. Just got it 1.5 yrs ago. Great rifle great round!

You choice probably should work fine

Honestly, deer just aren't that hard to kill. I have a hard time thinking of any caliber from .243 to the various .30's that would not make a fine deer rifle. With anything in that range, the gun (length, weight, action) are going to matter more than the caliber.

Where you will be hunting matters, too. Dense forest? Wide open plains? Rugged mountains? Different guns might be better choices for each.

I have not caught the short magnum syndrom. A 270, 308 or 30:06 will take whitetails in 99.99% of the usual situations. If you think you need to make a little longer shot, a 7mm mag is a good choice, without bruising either your shoulder or wallet (ammo cost and availability).

30:30's work, however I subscibe to the theory that the 308 will do what a 30:30 does up close and leave you the flexibility for the longer shot opportunities that may come up.

Agree with mdauben on them being not that hard to bring down.Like all hunting, shot placement is the key.

We try to look at rifles, and handguns as a system. When choosing or deciding on any one part, just realize that it is,only one part.

And the gun/sighting equip is only part of a bigger, overall pkg.Marksmanship, tactics, field preparedness, ect, ect.Heck,a sharp knife and knowing how to field dress a Deer is right up there in my book.Theres been probably as many Deer "lost" with improper cleaning than by misplaced shots.....well, maybe not,but you get the idea.

Your trying to have a positive experience whilst hunting, and chowing down on a well prepared steak is part of the reward. The rifle/handgun/bow is the tool that accomplishes this. And yes,a .270 will kill Deer.

30/30 win or 303 is what I use or a shotgun slug. 3-06 or the 223 or even 308 moves to fast and deer may never know u hit him still he. Miles away from u and that don't help use the TKF talory knockdown formula, speed not evey thing when come to gun

Well first of all, it really helps if you use correct grammar and spelling.

I also agree we should not be using a (.22 whatever on a deer). But c'mon a .308 or 30-06 not being effective????
If you can't drop a deer with a .308 or 30-06, (essentially ballistic twins), maybe you shouldn't be hunting deer.
