It'll serve you well. There's a reason it's cartridge has been in service for 120 years .

I recommend the Remington Model 700. I bought one last summer and have been loving it ever since. It was a pawn shop find. It looked almost brand new (may not have been shot but a few times if at all) and I got it for $400.
Try some of the pawn shops around your area. They may have some good rifles for a great deal too.

Smith, may I ask why you feel the need to update the wood stock of the Mosin? Do you feel an update is necessarily an upgrade?

To me I see two arguments against:

1) If it ain't broke then don't fix it. It is a classic rifle with a long successful history.
2) A $120 rifle isn't really worth spending very much money of modding. You aren't going to be increasing its value. In fact, you may be decreasing its value by changing the furniture.

I agree with Chris. Personally I would leave it stock, but it's your choice not mine. Who knows you might find you enjoy it stock more.

YES, you CAN do better than a Mosin, but it's going to cost you.

For what you'd spend on a Mauser in crappy shape, you can

get a tricked-out Mosin sniper, or 3 or 4 -91/30s and M44s...

I agree. However for his intended purpose it's pretty hard to beat. My main problems with the Mauser is its sights are difficult for me to pick up, I never can find ammunition whether it's surplus or commercial, and for the cost of a Mauser I can get a Mosin Nagant plus a boat load of surplus ammunition.

Don't get me wrong, the Mauser's a surperb firearm, but it just falls a tad short with me in terms of a fun range gun that I can shoot a lot and not have trouble with ammunition cost, availability, reliabilty, or the sights.

I'm also a bit biased, because I love Russian firearms more than most other firearms, except American firearms of course .

I just found a mosin for 90$ and a black furniture for 60$ and I bought 150$ worth of mill surplus so I am a very happy camper
